Healthy Hydration

Whether you’re playing sports, traveling or just relaxing in the sun, being well-hydrated is essential to your health and wellness. But, why is hydration such a key part of your overall health?

Importance of Hydration

Staying hydrated is very vital for not only your health but also your well-being. With temperatures on the rise and increasing humidity, it is especially important to remember to increase your fluid intake during the summer months!

Our bodies are 60% water by weight, and consuming water is necessary to keep the body’s systems functioning properly, regulate body temperature and flush out waste. There are a few ways to make sure you stay hydrated such as:

  • Drinking six to eight glasses of water each day (consult a doctor for specific amount specifically for you)
  • Drinking a glass of water before a meal
  • Drinking one glass of water during each meal
  • Using a reusable water bottle that you keep with you during the day

Dehydration

Listening to your body and drinking water throughout the day can avoid the dreaded dehydration. Your body has a number of signs it gives when hydration levels are low, and here’s what to look for:

  • Feeling thirsty
  • Headaches
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Decrease in urine output
  • Darkening of urine color to dark yellow or amber colored
  • Constipation
  • Hunger

Dehydration can be a serious condition that can lead to problems ranging from swollen feet or a headache to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke.

 

Staying Ahead of the Hydration Curve

Drinking clear fluids throughout the day is the best way to stay ahead. If you’re not a fan of drinking water, adding flavoring of slices of fruit or 100% fruit juice can help improve the taste and keep you on track!

While drinking water is always the best way to go, including other sources of water through food can also help! Most of these foods are fruits + vegetables, so make sure you stop in the produce aisle next time you’re out shopping! Sports drinks contain electrolytes which help while doing outside activities, but please be mindful! These types of beverages are high in added sugars and calories, so they can quickly knock you off the healthy track.

 

Staying hydrated is not just important while doing vigorous activities, but also while in the sun on a hot or humid day. Sitting around relaxing can cause your body to need more fluids, stay hydrated!
