Ingredient Highlight – Capros® (Indian gooseberry)

By: Crystal Shelton

Indian gooseberry is native to India and parts of the Middle East and its fruits have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years for various health aspects.  Although small in size, the fruits are a nutritious source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and a diverse blend of polyphenolic compounds.  In fact, the edible fruit tissue contains 160 times the vitamin C of an apple; up to 720 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit pulp. Human clinical studies conducted in both India and the United States have discovered a multitude of cardioprotective benefits from consuming the fruit such as supporting healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, lowering C-reactive protein, and reducing oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles.  Indian gooseberry works to support healthy cholesterol levels by reducing HMG-CoA reductase activity, a rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol synthesis in the liver.  Reducing HMG-CoA reductase activity not only results in less cholesterol being synthesized by the liver, but it also increases the synthesis of LDL receptors, resulting in increased clearance of LDL and VLDL from the bloodstream.  There is a growing body of evidence that this fruit also increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the good cholesterol in humans.  This is important for two primary reasons: HDL transports excess cholesterol away from the arterial wall to the liver for elimination and it prevents the oxidation of LDL particles.  Indian gooseberry has been well supported by scientific research to help maintain cholesterol levels within the normal range for optimal cardiovascular health.  Capros® is a patented and standardized extract of Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus Emblica). As a powerful antioxidant, it helps support optimal health as well as provide effects of optimal cardiovascular health, anti-aging, and sports performance benefits. Capros® possesses adaptogenic properties which help provide resistance to stressors and promotes balance in the body. This is unique among superfruits and enhances Capros’ wellness profile beyond the standard benefits provided by generic antioxidants. Capros is a multi-patented, certified-organic, self-affirmed GRAS extract of Indian gooseberry which sets it apart from others on the market.
